Moving Day

Today the movers are coming to take things to storage.  I should be getting things ready, but it's early and I'm not quite thinking straight yet, so I thought I'd blog instead.  LOL

Why am I up so early?  Well, besides the stress of getting everything wrapped up with the house, Kevin got up at 5:30 am to head up to Iowa to pick up our travel trailer.  It's been at the dealer getting some warranty work done while Kevin's been down here in Austin with me.  We had hoped to head out together, but things with the house are just taking longer than anticipated.  So I'll wrap things up here and meet him in Branson, MO on Saturday.

We start our first workamping job there on Monday.  We will be managing the Branson View RV Park.  As soon as I figure out what's up with their website, I'll post a link.

Back to the house thing... I had no idea how much stuff one can accumulate in 18 years in one house!  And it's funny to see what people want to buy and are willing to pay for and what they just walk by.  I have a lot of antique things that just aren't moving.  Today is decision day as I don't want to store them so must decide where they will go.  Yesterday we made 5 trips to Goodwill and suspect there will be more trips today and tomorrow.

While it would be better if the house were staged with furniture, we decided we didn't want to have to come back to Austin to pack things up so it will be empty when I leave here on Saturday.  We have rented a 10x10 climate controlled storage space and are keeping the good furniture, family heirlooms and other irreplaceable things there until we settle on a plan for sure.  While I believe we want to travel full time, a home base is really important to Kevin so we might as well keep the basic furniture so we don't have to replace that down the road.

I'm pretty sure I'm babbling so I best go now and get things ready.  Wish me luck!

  1. I can certainly understand the stress related to a move like this. Our house was empty when we got our two contracts. Wishing you and Kevin happiness in Branson. We would love to have a work amp opportunity like that.
Our work at animal shelter has been enjoyable but we do miss contact with other people.

  2. There were things we wanted to keep also. Instead of renting a storage unit we purchased a utility trailer and packed it full. It is parked at Len's sons in Alabama. We check to make sure things are okay when visiting. We figure we can sell the trailer if/went we settle and recoup most of our money.

This is surely a stressful time for you but things will calm down. At least that's what I keep telling myself too!

  3. If it weren't for great-grandpa's roll top desk and the leather sofa, we might have gone with the utility trailer as well. Kevin would LOVE to have a big utility trailer! LOL But we decided climate control was a must for now. I'm anxiously waiting for that time when things calm down! lol

  5. Good luck...I can feel your stress been there last year when we downsized...best move we ever made..to put an apartment into our big house and move into it and rent out the main house..so in essence went from 5 bedroom 3 bath to one bedroom 2 bath :)..but still have the option of moving back into big place and renting apartment if we choose..made many trips to goodwill, gave heirlooms to kids-furniture to folks who needed it...and stored the precious stuff in a storage unit on the property so it would be covered by our homeowners insurance. The stuff we accumulate over the years is unreal isn't it...good luck...hope the house sells fast for you!! We'll be following along on your journey

    1. We donated nearly a whole apartment full of furniture and home items to the Battered Women's shelter for a woman and her son who moved into an apartment yesterday. I think all she needed was silverware and a bed! Felt good to know it was going to someone who needed it.

  6. Carol - I was wondering if you'd fallen off of planet earth or what! lol -- I am happy you are 'moving on' to a better spot in life. Tell Kevin I agree with him; I have a need for a homebase, too. TM and I will start 'downsizing' soon [I just blogged about this] and deciding our next move. Have fun in the Branson area!
